- Part 5: Domain Extentions
Extensions: .com, .net, .org, .doesitmatter
When putting domain names into categories at the start of this book, you may have noticed that I didn’t cover TLDs, which is a major way to categorize domain names. However, these have nothing to do with the words found in the domain name—in fact, TLD stands for Top Level Domain and refers to the extension used with your domain name: .com, .net, .org, and so on. Your Top Level Domain is very important.
If you want the real traffic, you have to go with .com. There’s just no substitute for this TLD. I regularly visit the website www.findreligion.net and even though I’m a regular reader, I still sometimes accidentally type www.findreligion.com. Major corporation all have .com sites and your top buyers will want .com sites.
That said, if you don’t have a .com site, you can still market it. Every country has its own TCL, so by approaching Japanese businesses with a .jp address or Canadian businesses with a .ca address are not bad ideas. You can also buy and sell .net and .org addresses with some success. They won’t bring you the big bucks, but if the rest of the domain name is good, you can still find a decent buyer.
